Aglione Toscano
The aglione toscano is a rare and prized variety of garlic that originates from Tuscany, Italy. It is also known as the “giant garlic of the Valdichiana,” referring to the fertile area where it is primarily cultivated. Distinguished by its impressive size, each clove of aglione is much larger than standard garlic cloves, and a single bulb can weigh up to 800 grams (1.7 pounds).
One of its key features is its mild and sweet flavor, which is less pungent than regular garlic. It is often referred to as “garlic without a kiss” because its gentler taste doesn’t leave a strong aftertaste or cause bad breath. The texture of aglione is creamy and ideal for preparing sauces and traditional Tuscan dishes, such as pici all’aglione, a pasta dish where the garlic is the star ingredient.
